The world is tearing apart. News channels all across India are breaking the news; 'Tanmay Bhat insults Sachin Tendulkar and Lata Mangeshkar in a video.' High priority debates and meetings are being held to discuss this issue. Security officials are being rushed to protect the nation from this terrible terrorist attack. Politicians are putting in their maximum efforts by instructing social media sites to remove this disturbing video. Afterall, we are a free country right?
If this sounds familiar to you, you're an Indian and you have your views on this.
As Tanmay Bhat said, "This is the roast all over again."
He is right. The condition hasn't changed. The basic ingredients are a video, comedian(s), celebrity(s) and a little bit of profanity and you are ready to get all the airtime in the world. You are national news.
As usual, this incident divided India(atleast those of us who gave a sh*t) into two parties.
Party A: Those who take offense.
You guys are not wrong. Taking offense is human nature. You exist in order to maintain balance in the universe. Your judgement protects the weak and the powerless. Sachin Tendulkar and Lata Mangeshkar so totally need your help in maintaining their image. Its like this video smashed their status as legends and made them a joke for the nation. You are going to save them and they will worship you for it.
Party B: Those who laughed it off.
You guys are wrong. You need to realise the intensity of the situation. Two of the country's best individuals have been made fun of and y'all are just laughing it off. I mean you should be laughing at Bollywood movies that make fun of the stereotypes. Laughing at legends is wrong. Laughing at a stammering person in a certain movie, a South Indian with a really long name, a gay guy, a dark-skinned guy; now THAT is legit entertainment.
For those of you who still didn't sense the strong tone of sarcasm used above, go to bed. You are probably lacking sleep.
While Tanmay Bhat might have crossed a line making fun of two legends, it isn't such a big deal. As with the AIB roast, the choice of watching the video is with you. Nobody forced you to watch it or get offended by it. Lata Mangeshkar doesn't even know who Tanmay Bhat so how does it even matter to the others what a stand-up comedian has to say about her. Tanmay Bhat did what he felt was funny and so do you all when you want to make someone laugh. Don't tell me you never read out a sardar joke in your life. Ever imagine how offended a sardar might feel? The world needs to lower its hypocrisy levels for its own good.
We have so many issues that deserve national attention and should actually be making it to the news. But here we are, getting offended by a 4 minute video whose existence shouldn't even really be making a difference. We need to sort out our priorities and get ourselves thinking straight. Afterall videos can be deleted with the click of a button whereas, poverty, corruption and a number of other issues, cannot.
Thank you for reading.
Stay tuned!
