Today I attended the Comic Con in Mumbai and I realised that this convention brings together a lot of people. Irrespective their caste, religion, gender. You get to meet so many people, interact with them, be a part of something large forgetting all your differences.
And that got me thinking, all of this was made possible due to comics, or broadly speaking, literature. A majority of the population reads. Be it a newspaper, a novel, a comic book or even a greeting card. Literature has unimaginable power and often acts as a supplement to to our imagination. Combined, you can create worlds, different from ours. Take the examples of J. K. Rowling, Veronica Roth, Suzanne Collins, Cassandra Clare and many such authors who have used their imagination to create places a human mind could only dream of. How many of us dream to study at Hogwarts? Or get sorted into factions? All of this is because talented people combined the two most powerful weapons at their disposal to give our brain food for thought.
And that's not the best part.
The best part is that YOU can imagine and you can write. Regardless of your writing skills and your vocabulary you can produce masterpieces if you could spend 10 minutes of your day on a table with a paper and a pen.
The possibilities are limitless. You can be a dragon slaying prince or a detective working undercover for 2 countries or Adolf Hitler. It's all upto you. Once you sit to write and you have an idea in mind, form simple sentences, use as many pages as you want. Finish your piece and give it a read. The satisfaction you will feel will be priceless.
Proof read it. Check your writing for grammatical errors and let others read your work. You may not be confident about it but you have nothing to lose. If they don't like it, there's always room for improvement. Who knows, by the time your work reaches your friends of friends, you might have gotten new fans. They will motivate you to write more.
This way, you will not only improve your writing skills but also give others food for thought. Just like the pro authors gave you. If you think poetry is your jam, go ahead, rhyme those words but make sure they make sense because we don't want to be worse versions of Baba Sehgal.
Literature gave you a window and you in turn gave others a window; a window to express yourself.
A window to be one with your mind and your thoughts. A window to unite with the people you interact with and no wonder who they are or where they come from, you will realise that it doesn't matter. Literature made you a part of something bigger. Welcome to the family!
Note that this gives me the right to say 'You're adopted!' to your face.
Thank you for reading.
Stay tuned.
Toodles :)
