Okay now I may not know much about religion being an atheist but I sure as hell know my facts. Gautam Buddha, CEO and Founder of Buddhism. Call him whatever, God or mortal, that man knew what he was talking about. I had read this in a comic book based on his life, (If you're a 90's kid, you'll know that I'm referring to Amar Chitra Katha) that Gautam Buddha had figured out one thing in his quest to enlightenment, at the root of all our sufferings and miseries, lies desire.
What is desire?
Desire is the want for something or someone.
It's true, you'll see that desire drives us. (We are a mess. We can be simpler but we created our own bars, standards, expectations and now we have to live up to it. So even if we call ourselves normal, we aren't) Normal people like ourselves have a basic desire; to survive and we can't do ONLY surviving so we have to look for better things to do and this endless process creates endless desires.
Desires only have 2 outcomes, one where you get what you want, you feel happy and then you develop another desire OR your wish is never fulfilled and you brood about it and feel sad.
We as normal humans cannot obviously live without desires. We can never truly be completely content. There is always some X which you will want irrespective of all the things you have in life.
In my case I crave for attention, I always want someone to talk to, someone to share my troubles with, but if I don't have to do any of the above with, I feel sorrowful.
So what can be done?
Well, its easy, lower your expectations from a person or an object and try to keep as limited desires as you can. You cannot end desiring but you can cut down on it. Try your best to reduce your wants and you will lead a happier life.
All thanks to my homie Buddha who's given the world a lot to think to about.
Thanks for reading.
Stay tuned!
